I’m pretty sure that most of travel agents salary is based off of how much they sell to customers, sort of like a commission of the cost of the trip. (This might also be based on various companies procedure, so don’t base it all off of this answer)

How much of a discount do you get with a travel agent?

Question: How much of a discount do you get with a travel agent?
This June, a group of students and I are planning to fly to Russia from Washington DC. I’ve been looking at ticket prices online, and they are quite expensive (about $ 2200 to the city where we will be going). I’ve heard that it is usually much cheaper to get international tickets through a travel agent. What percentage of discount could we expect? Thanks!

Answer:

Answer by Knowitall
Travel agents usually can’t give that much of a discount because there is not much margin on airfares these days. but a travel agent can usually get the ticket for you for the same price that you found on the net, but you have the peace of mind of knowing that you have a human to contact if something goes wrong or if you need to make any changes.

How much does it cost to hire a Travel Agent for my trip?

Question: How much does it cost to hire a Travel Agent for my trip?
My husband and I are wanting book a 7 day stay in New York City, and wanted flight and hotel covered. We live in Northern California (about 2 hours from the Oregon border) and I would like to know if anyone knows how much it would be to go through a travel agent? Is their cost added into the cost of the package with the flight and hotel? Or do they get a commission on booking vacation packages, and thats how they get paid, so there would be no money coming out on my end?

Please, only serious answers. Thanks!

They get paid through the cruise lines and destination hotels. But, the price they charge you is probably higher than what you would pay if you book it yourself.

How much training required to be a travel agent?

Question: How much training required to be a travel agent?
Ok, so I’m looking at different part time job options for when I graduate school. I don’t want to go to college but I’m will to do a year or two of tech school, or on the job training would be best. I was wondering if you need any extra schooling to be a travel agent or if that is even an option for a part time job. I know the demand for travel agents just depends on the economy at the time but how popular is that now? And how much, if any training is involved. If anyone out there is a travel agent, any imput would be appreciated.

I don’t think there is much training involved. Look into the job openings to see if they require a definite education level, if there is experience required, or if it says training provided, etc. Yahoo!’s HotJobs is a good place to start. I know that there is a degree offered at most universities for Parks, Recreation, and Tourism. This can be finished in as little as 3 years (Bachelors).
